From Moody & Cozy Interior Design Styles to a Fresh Coastal Vibe

Hey there! I’m Ellen, Owner & Designer at EP Design Studio. I can speak for all creatives when I say that we love nothing more than to work on design projects that fulfill us creatively. The styles/trends I mention below have been on my radar for a while, so I’m totally manifesting them for future projects and would love to put an EP Design Studio stamp on these. Keep reading to learn more and maybe you’ll find that you may be the right client for me to help execute one of these vision boards for!

1. Moody Traditional Charm

Just like many things in life, interior design is cyclical and traditional styles are being fully embraced again. I love the idea of elevating classic & traditional styles by incorporating some modern color palettes and shapes like you see in these beautiful inspirational images. Do you have an older home where you want to stay true to its character & charm? This style will be perfect for your home! Not only does it still feel classic, but incorporating modern elements through furniture shapes & color palettes can still make the space feel updated. This vibe is all about inviting multiple textures & patterns in the space. From vintage rug patterns, velvets, leathers, woods, and traditional decor like oil paintings & portraits of the past. As you can see, this space feels layered & cozy through all the textures and forms. You’ll also see wood tones being fully embraced here. If painting wood, then in rich & moody tones, such as olive greens. Of course, paired with neutral colors to offer a balance and contrast (unless you want to fully send on the moody vibe- which I’m totally here for). We’re in the era of embracing character & charm again. I’m all for having a home that will spark a conversation amongst guests each time. ;)

2. Modern Organic

You really can’t go wrong with neutrals, right? The modern organic style has reigned supreme for some years now, and I’d say it’s still going strong. I love this style because it’s perfect for the client who still loves traditional textures & patterns, but in a more neutral color palette to keep everything bright & modern. The key here is to play around with varying neutral tones and not be afraid to incorporate darker colors where needed. It’s important for the space to have some dimension, instead of being too tonal. So adding in pops of medium to dark browns, taupes, and blacks for contrast will help. Even pops of colors that are found in nature, such as greens, rusty reds, oranges, and yellows will complement this style. Light wood tones, like oak, are dominant in these spaces. Again, we’re not getting rid of the wood tones, but keeping them lighter & fresh for an overall modern & sleek look. Another great addition to this space? Plants & florals! Hence the term “organic” in the name. When styling this type of look, I’d definitely add some statement florals, greenery & stems when styling built-ins, console tables & coffee tables. These help to fill in the gaps in the space and add that perfect pop of color.

3. Modern Coastal Oasis

Living in California, we’re blessed with over 800 miles of stunning coastline. It’s only natural that our beautiful environment is a constant source of inspiration! I’m obsessed with all the character & charm that comes with small beach towns, so furnishing & styling a beach-style home would be a dream! I love the approach of a more modern coastal vibe. Instead of a very obvious coastal/beach theme with signs that read “beach this way” or surfboards as decorative items, I’d approach this style so that it still feels very livable and cozy. Incorporating natural materials and textures like jute, linen, wicker, seagrass and more really brings out the influences from nature. Complementary accents like leather accent chairs or pillows will help elevate the space too. It’s all about the fresh, bright & layered look. Not only is this style perfect for the homeowner, but also for those who own short-term investment properties near the coast! Imagine if your Airbnb property looked like the above. Those bookings would go way up! And don’t worry- there are performance fabrics for many upholstered furniture pieces. ;)

4. Bold Statement Powder Rooms

While I focus mostly on full-service furnishing & styling projects, I’ve been loving all the bold powder room makeovers I’ve been seeing and would be thrilled to tackle a renovation project like this! I’m so happy that people are more inclined to jump out of their comfort zone nowadays and play around with color drenching & bold designs. Also, can we talk about statement sinks and countertops? Drool-worthy. While it would make sense to play it safe in such a small space.. why not go with wallpaper, wainscoting, moody color palettes and natural stone sinks?? Our powder rooms need love too. If you’re someone who loves to entertain, add this space to your next home project makeover list! Considering that the powder room is where guests will go often, it will definitely be a crowd-pleaser. Let’s not forget about the lighting- it’s a fantastic opportunity to experiment with accent lighting fixtures to create that moody and cozy ambiance as seen above.

If any of these styles speak to you- then what are you waiting for? We serve throughout the greater Central Valley of California & beyond!
